"I’ve been part of Community Living Temiskaming South since March 2017. Before Community Living, I felt scared and nervous. I was moving to a new building and meeting new people. I didn’t know what to expect, or what was going to happen. The rules I lived by were going to be different and it was going to be the first time I would be living on my own.
When I first moved into my apartment, I had a roommate. When he moved out, I was scared of being alone and sleeping in my apartment. But I did it, and I learned a lot about myself. With the help of T.E.A.M.S and Foundations, I learned how to cook for myself and be more independent. I also learned how to budget, buy groceries, how to find a job and be a great employee. Being encouraged to advocate for myself has helped me be more confident in standing up for myself and not be taken advantage of. I learned a lot of cooking through Supper Club with T.E.A.M.S. I will soon be a leader with Supper Club. This means, I will get to do what the Community Inclusion Facilitators do – help out the other people, plan the meal and cook. It makes me feel really good to know I will be a leader. Supper Club has taught me how to learn new things, and it also lets me teach others and be a mentor. I’m even going to be the DJ at our Halloween party and will play my favourite heavy metal music!
I think that volunteering is a great experience. I enjoy it because it gets me out of the house, I get to help my community and it helps me get ready for a job. Now, my next goal is to find a job. I know I would be a great employee. I am good at getting to know people. The more you get to know someone, the more you make friends, and you even become a better friend. I’ve done some co-ops for school, and even won a Student Recognition Award during last year’s placement because I was really good at my job. I followed my manager’s directions and always stayed focused on the task I was given. I want to find a job where I can stock shelves, put things where they belong and help take heavy things out for people.
Having had all these new experiences, I am now more confident around other people and with the choices I make."
