"My passion to teach students with special needs has been fed naturally as I was growing up. I had a cousin with Cerebral Palsy and another with Down Syndrome. I had great joy playing with them and teaching them new things. I always felt satisfied spending time with them and in return, they would teach me about how joyful it is to be with them. Their magnetism and joyful perspective on life has nourished me and sparked the beginning of a future career.
I decided to go into teaching to devote myself to children and youth with specific challenging needs related to their learning and independence. I had the joy to work with students who had various disabilities such as intellectual, physical and neurological challenges, autism, learning disabilities, selective mutism, genetic disorders and much more profiles. I also took joy in teaching French as a second language and French Immersion but this was for a very short time.
Throughout my career, parents have told me that I have touched their child’s life in special ways but more intensely in return, every one of my students has touched mine. They have taught me to love with no limit, share joy in every moment and that learning and behavioral challenges are puzzle pieces that just need to be reconnected piece by piece with patience and determination. Not a single student with specific needs has made me regret my career choice. The more challenging their profile was, the most joy I found in working with them. If I needed more time to help them meet the proper goals of success, I knew I was the one who just had not yet found the key to their success. Together we achieved tenacity and acquisition. I had the opportunity to be able to see joy and love in the eyes of each and every one of those wonderful students. I am forever grateful for my career choice and the shower of benefits I was able to get out from their presence through my 30 years in Special Education either as a special education resource teacher, coordinator, and diagnostician.
My passion to help students in need now continues in a new twist through my business called Services Éducatifs Spécialisés / Specialized Educational Services. I give consultation and assessment services to parents, agencies, and students."
